AMD Just Bought Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs for $8.2 Billion — The Spatial-AI Lab Behind Marble and Atlas Is Now a Chip Company’s Secret Weapon

We have covered Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs more than any other outfit in this Lab — Marble, Atlas, the splats they kept handing us. On September 29, 2026, AMD bought the whole company for $8.2 billion in stock. Li becomes AMD’s Chief Scientist. The team whose worlds we have been walking through all year now lives inside a chip company.

The Story

World Labs is two years old. It raised money, shipped Marble (text and images in, explorable 3D worlds out), then shipped Atlas, an “omni-model” that films a camera move and hands you the Gaussian splat it just invented. We wrote about both. The results kept getting better.

Now AMD is paying $8.2 billion for it. That is an all-stock deal, AMD’s second-biggest ever, behind only the $50B Xilinx buy in 2022. It closes by the end of 2026, pending regulators. Fei-Fei Li joins as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, reporting straight to CEO Lisa Su. Co-founders Justin Johnson and Ben Mildenhall — yes, the NeRF co-inventor — keep running World Labs as a research group inside AMD.

Li’s own framing says it all: “without a focused hardware effort, AI is hobbled in efficiency.” Scaling world models, she said, meant “getting closer to the hardware.” So the godmother of modern computer vision is now helping design the chips that run her own models.

Why You Should Care

This is not just finance news. It is a signal about where spatial AI is headed, and it touches tools you use.

  • Spatial AI is now a chip war. NVIDIA has Cosmos, Lyra, Omniverse. AMD had nothing comparable. Buying World Labs is AMD planting a flag in physical AI, robotics, and world generation — the same ground NVIDIA has been grabbing.
  • World models just got validated at $8.2B. The thing we keep calling “the future of 3D” is now priced like it. Expect more money, more labs, more releases in text-to-world.
  • Marble and Atlas get a hardware backer. Imagine Marble tuned to run fast on AMD Instinct GPUs, or splat generation baked closer to the silicon. The scary part: a research group inside a chip giant may not stay as open or as accessible as a scrappy startup.

Here is the honest worry for creators. World Labs built its name shipping splats you could actually download — Marble exports .ply and .spz, files that drop straight into Blender 5.3, Unreal, or your splat viewer. A chip company’s incentive is to sell chips, not to keep a web app cheap and open. We hope the exports stay. We are watching.

IK3D Lab Take

We have spent a year treating World Labs as the most exciting toy in spatial AI. Now it is a line item on AMD’s roadmap. That is a huge win for the field: it proves world models are strategic, not a demo. It also means the race is now AMD vs NVIDIA, with the two best minds in the space — Li and Mildenhall — on the red team.

Our bet: this is great for the technology and uncertain for the access. Hardware money will push world generation faster and sharper than any startup budget could. But the open, download-the-splat spirit that made Marble a maker favorite is exactly the thing that tends to get quietly optimized away once a giant owns it. Grab the exports now. Learn the splat pipeline now. The models will only get bigger — make sure your workflow does not depend on one company’s web button.
